What Germany’s 2025 Start-up Figures Reveal
Germany’s start-up landscape gained noticeable momentum in 2025. Recent analyses by Startup Verband and startupdetector show that the number of new start-ups not only increased significantly but also remained consistently strong throughout the year. With 3,568 newly founded start-ups, 2025 reached a new record level - 29% above 2024 and even higher than the previous peak in 2021. The second half of the year was especially strong, averaging 335 new start-ups per month.
What stands out is not only the overall growth, but also how it is distributed across regions and sectors. Established start-up hubs such as Berlin and Munich remain highly influential, but the data also points to growing momentum in other regions. The report highlights particularly strong growth in Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony, while research-driven locations such as Aachen, Potsdam and Heidelberg are gaining visibility as well. This suggests that science-based entrepreneurship, technology transfer and broader regional diversification are becoming increasingly important within the ecosystem.
Thematic priorities also point to developments that are likely to shape the years ahead. Digital and technology-driven business models continue to dominate, while science- and medicine-related topics are becoming more prominent. Artificial intelligence stands out in particular: 27 percent of all newly founded start-ups in 2025 use AI as a key part of their business model. Software saw the largest absolute increase in new formations, while the medical sector also recorded strong growth.
Taken together, 2025 provides a solid foundation for the ecosystem’s next phase of development. The decisive factor in 2026 will be how growing start-up activity is translated into long-term innovative strength and sustainable growth.
